Compare local access

Dental deserts and NHS dentist access

Dental access is uneven. The density map compares NHS-linked dentist locations with local population data where available.

What we mean by dental desert

A dental desert is an area where NHS dental coverage is thin relative to the local population. There is no single official definition, so Dentist List uses postcode district comparisons.

How the density map works

We count NHS-linked dental practices with coordinates in each postcode district and compare that with resident population data where we have it.

The map uses postcode district centroids, not filled boundary polygons, because the app does not yet store boundary geometry.

What the data cannot tell you

A dense area does not guarantee a new NHS appointment. A thin area may still have nearby practices over the district border. Use this as a planning signal, then check live acceptance and call the practice.
