Choose NHS or private

Can a private dentist also offer NHS treatment?

Many practices mix NHS and private care. The important question is whether they are currently accepting the type of patient you need.

Mixed practices are common

A dental practice can provide NHS treatment, private treatment or both. A practice may offer NHS check-ups to existing patients while offering private options for other treatments.

What to ask before booking

Ask whether the appointment is NHS or private, what the likely charge is, and whether any proposed treatment is clinically available on the NHS.

  • If you need NHS care, ask whether they are accepting new NHS adults or children.
  • If you need urgent care, ask whether the urgent appointment is NHS or private.
  • If you are offered private treatment, ask for the cost before treatment starts.

How to filter on Dentist List

Use the practice type filters to include NHS dentists, private dentists or both. Use accepting NHS patients when your main goal is a new NHS appointment.
